How Process Excellence Can Help Your Organization Gain a Competitive Edge?

by Paul Marrero 12. July 2012 07:49

First, what is a process? Processes are everywhere. Work process, manufacturing process, production process, application process and so on. A process is a series of actions or steps taken in order to achieve a particular end result.

"If you can't describe what you are doing as a process, you don't know what you're doing." W. Edwards Deming

Process excellence, standardization and efficiency is a way to save money. Becoming leaner and more efficient will gain you a competitive edge in this economy. Process excellence is improving the way that businesses create and deliver value to customers.

"It's about what your organization does for customers, not to them."

Why does this matter? Because the world is changing. In this service-based economy, what you make is not the differentiator. It's what you do and how you do it. Do your employees know how their roles serve the customer? Are they empowered to make decisions to provide the best customer experience for the customer? -- Do you know who a customer is? You must understand and deliver what your customers need better than your competitors.

"Process Excellence helps you achieve that."

Process excellence will help you lower your operating costs, but it isn't just about that. It is about improving the way your business creates and delivers value to its customers.

"It is not the employer who pays the wages. Employers only handle the money. It is the customer who pays the wages." Henry Ford

Process is about aligning the organization to achieve success. That means less complexity, more time, improved products, lower costs, increased revenue, better lives and happier customers. Process is just another name for the work we do.

How do we begin improving our processes and achieving process excellence? There are a number of ways to derive the end result (and it really doesn't end because you will want to continuously improve upon them). There are Business Process Management Suites (BPMS), but technology alone will not "save the day."

"We can't solve problems by using the same kind of thinking we used when we created them." Albert Einstein
